Student Markets for Writing: Magazines, Books, Contests

© Amy N. Thomas 2006-2007

Many students ask me where they can publish their own stories, poems and artwork. I've compiled this list of publishers who accept student work.  If your favorite magazine or book pubisher isn't listed here, then they probably do not accept work by students. Some publishers will not enter into a contract with someone who is under the age of 18. Others explain their own reasons on their websites.  By using this list as a starting point in your search, I hope that you find a home for your work! Submission information can change often, and some magazines stop taking submissions. This information was current as of July 2006.

TIPS: Before sending items for consideration, obtain your parent’s permission. Then look at the website and previous issues (check your school and public libraries). Write a letter introducing yourself and telling why you are sending the manuscript or artwork. Be sure to follow the directions for each publication, too!
